The most popular place on Majorca for family beach holidays
On the north coast of Mallorca lies the Bay of Alcudia which boasts clear shallow waters and long white sandy beaches. It is therefore not much of surprise to find Majorca's biggest beach resort here. From Port d'Alcudia in the west to Can Picafort 10 km down the coast, you will find a strip of apartment blocks and resort style hotels that offer everything from budget to luxurious accommodation.
As the name of Port d'Alcudia, this was once just a port serving a city - now the port has completely outgrown the town that it serves. The biggest of the resorts on Mallorca's northeast coast, it stands at the head of a sandy beach which continues around the bay of Alcudia as far as Can Picafont.
The town is popular with families because of all the facilities that the resort has developed - water parks, go-karts, tourist trains and crazy golf are all here for you. The beach is really fabulous, with clear and safe waters for children to bathe in, and soft golden white sand to play in. The further east along the beach you go, the quieter it becomes.
The area around the fishing harbour is the most attractive; the promenade on Passeig Maritim faces a row of fish restaurants. Near here is the commercial port, where passenger ferries leave for the Menorcan city of Ciutadella.
Along the shoreline is where most of the apartments and hotels can be found. The area is very residential and although cars are allowed to drive through here traffic moves slowly and the streets are more pedestrianised. It is not as pretty back here as down by the water front but there is a canal system that leads to an inland lake that creates a system of water ways between the buildings which does add a level of charm.
The beach in Port d'Alcudia is more like a mud flats than golden silky sands. You have to go further up the beach to find the really good stuff - vast areas of beach with row upon row of sunloungers and parasols. Some way down the coast, it changes from being Alcudia Beach to the Playa de Muro. Here the beach narrows somewhat but it is quieter and the sand is white and soft. Eventually, you will reach the holiday resort of Can Picafort, with it's large choice of hotel & apartment block accommodation.
For a more cultural & historic experience, head to the town of Alcudia a couple of miles inland - it is a wonderfully restored Medieval town with city walls and Roman ruins - it also has one of the best markets on Mallorca.
